Bedroom Chandelier Lighting

Chandeliers can provide both ambient light and beauty to your bedroom.

Bedroom chandelier lighting is becoming a more popular illumination solution.

Nothing will add a touch of elegance and romance to your bedroom like a chandelier floating overhead. Whether the look you desire is traditional or modern, there's bound to be a style that will work with your decor and provide the ambient light you need.

Bedroom chandelier lighting has taken a popular fixture from dining rooms and entryways and moved it into the sleeping quarters. The style has gained popularity in recent years as homeowners turn their bedrooms into luxurious suites. But chandeliers aren't limited to the master bedroom. Hanging a feminine chandelier in white, pastel or bright color can turn any girl's bedroom into a princess paradise.

Whether or not a chandelier is right for your bedroom depends on the size of your room and the height of your ceiling. Chandeliers usually work best in rooms with a ceiling height of more than 9 feet. However, in a girl's room, you might choose a mini-chandelier or chandelette, since children's rooms tend to be smaller than master bedrooms. A mini-chandelier may be designed more like a semi-flush light, which won't take up as much space.

The chandelier should complement, not overpower, furnishings placed under it. However, the most noticeable mistake when installing a bedroom chandelier is choosing a fixture that is too small for the room. To ensure this doesn't happen, experienced interior designers will often choose a chandelier that at first glance may look too large for the room.

Once you've determined the right size chandelier for your room, choose a fixture based on the room's predominant color or material. Ask yourself what type of statement you want to make, what mood you want to create. For a more traditional look, choose a chandelier with more ornamentation or decorative details. If your room's look is more modern, a fixture with simple lines and fewer details can be a stunning touch.

Hang a single chandelier over your bed to create a focal point, but make sure you won't hit your head on the light when you get in and out of bed. For reading light, hang smaller matching chandeliers over the nightstands on both sides of your bed. A mini-chandelier can work in this space, as well as in the closet, master bathroom and dressing areas.

As with any ceiling light, your aim is not to hang the light in the dead center of the room, but rather to center the fixture over the center of the room's strongest feature or furnishing, such as a bed.

When installing a chandelier, make sure to choose the right kind of light bulbs. Clear bulbs should be used if they'll be visible; use frosted bulbs in fixtures with shades.
