Laundry Room Accessories

The right accessories will turn your laundry room into an efficient space.

The right laundry room accessories will help you finish your washing chores more quickly.

When choosing accessories for your laundry room, the main considerations will be the amount of space you have, your family's needs, and your budget. When planning your laundry room, create a list of accessories you believe you'll need. Aside from a washer and dryer, the typical laundry room includes a few standard items.

Shelves. To ensure you have adequate storage for laundry soap, fabric softener, stain remover and other cleaners, you'll want ample shelving in your laundry room. If your budget is small, wire mesh shelves will do the job and are often adjustable.

Racks. Besides having a space for clothes that dry on hangers, you'll want to have racks that will accommodate sweaters and other garments that must be dried flat. Some designs allow the rack to pull out and retract from a wall cabinet as needed.

Iron and ironing board. If you have the space, setting up a station to iron your work clothes before hanging them in your closet is an added convenience. You can install a wall-mounted cabinet with a pull-out ironing board, or hang a rack to hold an ironing board until it's needed.

Baskets and bins. You'll need containers for holding both dirty and clean clothes. Cabinets with pull-out hampers are nice if you have the space, but if your space is limited, the best solution may be a small countertop on which you can place baskets. You can even install hanging laundry bags over your washer and dryer to save space.

A sink. If you have the space for a sink with a countertop, you'll have a space for folding as well as cabinets for storage underneath. At a minimum, a utility sink is a good idea to soak garments when needed.

Aesthetics. If you have the space, there's nothing wrong with adding a touch of beauty or whimsy to your laundry room. Colorful wall art and pretty window curtains can add a dash of style to your laundry room. Hang wall paper or paint a favorite color on the walls (or wall) to turn the space into a place you look forward to visiting, even it if is just to do laundry.

Craft area. Your laundry room isn't limited to just washing clothes. If you sew, you can set up an area with your sewing machine, fabric and notions. Include storage bins and shelves for your tools, as well as a dress mannequin if needed. The same principle holds true for craft and gift wrap centers: Consider your needs and space, and create a room that truly works for your family.
