Many homeowners shy away from dark colors such as navy blue because they are not sure how to work them into their home's decor. But if you love this deep color, there are ways to incorporate navy into your interior design in ways that will add drama and elegance without being dismal.
Like other dark colors, navy instantly makes a room more intimate and cozy, so it's a good choice for a bedroom. It is the color of the midnight sky, making it a natural shade in which to fall asleep. While it's one of the darkest shades available, navy offers a more soothing quality than black, and it works well with either contemporary or traditional furnishings.
A color of royalty, navy blue with traditional furniture or antiques—and with light fixtures in gold-toned metals—leads to a luxurious look. Couple it with crisp, white bed linens for balance. Navy can help bring out other design features in your bedroom, such as wainscoting, crown molding and exposed beams. This color also works well as a backdrop for a gallery wall of art or framed family photographs. Because the color is stunning on its own, you can decorate with minimal accessories if you prefer a more streamlined look.
If you're decorating a bachelor pad, navy is a great choice. Incorporate it with strong furniture pieces, light fixtures in brushed metals and clean lines, and brown or grey accents.
If you're unsure about using navy on all of your bedroom walls, try using the color on just an accent wall. A navy wall behind a bed with a large, pretty headboard and piles of pillows creates an inviting look. If your bedroom has a large window, painting that wall in navy can bring the color into your room on a smaller scale, letting bits of the navy show through, and you can pick up the shade in your bedspread, artwork and other accessories.
To keep a room with navy walls from being drab, choose paint with a bit of gloss and pops of color, such as yellow and lime green, in your accessories. Navy can work well in a nursery or child's bedrooms as well. Consider mixing navy with kelly green or orange in a boy's room—or bright pink, purple or red for a girl. A girl's bedroom with navy walls, white furniture and crisp white bed linens with eyelet touches is a feminine look.
