The stylish surfaces and luxe finishes used in this bedroom make the simple space feel special.
Designer Heather Hilliard blends beautiful contemporary art with elegantly striped walls for a peaceful and serene look.
The owners wanted a space that would be less traditional and more contemporary, while maintaining the existing architectural details such as the fireplace and trim.
Even though the room had large windows, the original furnishings did not accentuate the quality of natural light in the space. Brightly painted white and cream walls, a reflective dark floor finish, and French blue curtains lightened the room.
When we the removed silk wall upholstery, thousands of staples that held it in place took chunks out of the plaster walls. Our painters had to skim coat and “float” the walls and sand away any texture to create a really smooth surface for the stripes. Since the painted stripes were meant to be an art installation in the space,Willem Racke's decorative painting team spent a week drawing the stripes in pencil, using painter’s tape, levels and lasers. It was quite a production but it had to be perfect
Curves were integrated into the space to offset the rigid linear quality of the room's painted stripes. The Vladimir Kagan-inspired sofa is kidney shaped, the bedside lamps are curvy and round and the custom bench at the foot of the bed has carved round scroll ends.
